Pest, Hero's Square and Dohany Synagogue

Today we took a close-up look at the fascinating Budapest as we discovered landmarks in the city's Pest section on the eastern side of the Danube. We went inside the neo-Renaissance State Opera House for a special tour, and we toured St. Stephen's Basilica and the synagogue at Dohany. At Hero's Square we viewed the impressive statuary commemorating many of Hungary's early rulers and national hero.

Dohany Synagogue was built in 1859. It is the second largest synagogue in the world, after the Synagogue in New York City. The synagogue owns 28 original torahs, which were buried in a catholic church cemetery during the World War II and later dug up and donated anonymously after the war ended. The synagogue holds a total of 6000 persons for services.
